Bat Care & Services

Keep Your Cricket Bat Match Ready

A cricket bat is not a maintenance-free product. To help protect performance, durability and longevity, every bat should be prepared properly before use and maintained consistently throughout the season.

Ideal moisture levels

Cricket bats perform best when reasonable internal moisture is maintained. As a general guide, the ideal moisture range is approximately 8% to 12%. Excessively dry bats are more likely to become brittle, while excessive moisture can affect performance and feel.

Knocking-in Instructions

Before using a new cricket bat in nets or matches, the bat should be properly knocked in. This helps compress and condition the playing surface, edges and toe so the bat is better prepared for impact.
A bat that has not been correctly knocked in is more vulnerable to premature damage.

If you are not confident preparing the bat yourself, Multisports recommends selecting a bat preparation service before use.

Oiling Frequency

To support bat condition and reduce excessive drying:

  • Oil twice during winter
  • Oil once during summer

Only a light application is needed.
Over-oiling can be just as harmful as under-oiling, so care should be taken not to saturate the bat.

Moisture maintenance

To help maintain healthier moisture levels:

  • store the bat in a cool, dry indoor environment
  • avoid leaving it in direct sun, a hot car or against strong heat sources
  • avoid very dry storage conditions for long periods
  • inspect the bat regularly for dryness, surface cracking or changes in feel

Bathroom steam storage guidance

A practical way to help maintain minimal moisture is to store the bat in a bathroom near the shower area, not inside the shower itself, where it can benefit from mild ambient steam over time.
This should be done sensibly and in moderation.
The bat should never be exposed directly to water, heavy condensation or soaking conditions.

Ongoing Care Reminder

Regular oiling, sensible storage and early attention to minor wear can help extend the life of your bat.
If you notice significant toe damage, edge separation, deep seam marks or structural cracking,
stop using the bat and have it assessed before further play.
